Surfing and diving with the infodemic:
Observations from the global COVID-19 digital communication

Abstract:

COVID-19 brought about a tsunami of information to just about every corner of the globe.  Over the past 12 months, our research team has examined the evolution of international sentiments, the effects of communication on citizens and topics surrounding misinformation.  This talk will share the research background and a number of insights from our studies of a) the macro- and micro-level issues surrounding the pandemic on social media b) misinformation and countering efforts and c) campus surveillance app development and experiences.  Insights about emerging research topics, the evolution of social media data and potential application to health policy will be discussed.  Findings pertaining to the evolution of social media methods and potential applications to policy and practice will be discussed.

Bio note:

Professor Lwin is Chair and Professor of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication.  She is also currently the Director of NTU–University Scholars Programme. Prof Lwin’s research projects involve the utilization, design and assessment of digitally mediated health communication systems and social media to improve public health. Her research on technology use in promoting physical activity and nutrition education amongst children are tested in numerous schools while her work on mobile media use for infectious diseases has been piloted in hospitals in Singapore and regional countries. She is currently in partnership with NCID, leading research programmes on COVID-19 infodemic and developing a COVID-19 campus app for universities.  Prof Lwin has authored several peer-reviewed papers, books and book chapters. Amongst the awards. Prof Lwin has received are the Public Service Medal (Silver) by the President of Singapore, the Fulbright ASEAN Scholar Award, Ogilvy Foundation International Award for Academic Leadership, Outstanding Applied Research Award by the International Communication Association (ICA), and was awarded the ICA Fellowship in recognition of top communication scholarship in 2019.
