Public Lecture Series on Health Communication - Inaugural Public Lecture
Sue Baker OBE (Global Director of Time to Change)
Research and Impact Initiative on Communication in Healthcare at the Faculty of Arts, The University of Hong Kong (HKU RIICH), and Mind HK are pleased to invite you to an inaugural lecture by Sue Baker, OBE (Order of the British Empire), Global Director of Time to Change, on changing attitudes toward mental health.
Time to Change UK is the largest ever programme to end mental health stigma and discrimination and has led to significant improvements in public attitudes and reductions in reported discrimination, according to academic evaluation. Since Sue Baker set up Time to Change in 2007 she has transformed it into a worldwide movement impacting millions of people.
Earlier this year, Time to Change started to bring their work international, changing attitudes and curating evidence-based and culturally appropriate anti-stigma campaigns across the world. Sue Baker’s new global role involves working with community organisations, government, policy makers, and key stakeholders across the world to address stigma.
Sue is the co-founder of the Global Anti Stigma Alliance in 2012 and has supported over ten countries in setting up their anti-stigma programmes, from the Czech Republic to Singapore. She was previously the Marketing Director of a leading mental health charity, The Mental Health Foundation, in New Zealand and for nine years was the first Head of Media Relations at Mind UK. Sue is open about her experiences of anxiety, depression and, suicidal thoughts, and her cancer diagnosis in 2016. Her full bio can be found here.
Sue Baker, OBE, will speak on her experience leading groundbreaking anti-stigma campaigns, the importance of media portrayals and language, how and why attitudes change over time, and what we can do to in Hong Kong to become part of this global movement.
The task of improving attitudes toward mental health in Hong Kong will take all us: universities, workplaces, NGOs, journalists, students, and more. This talk will delve into why and how the world's most ambitious anti-stigma campaigns, such as Time to Change, have been a success.
